how do you spell Irony? G-O-R-E?

This weekend's concert fiasco for climate change featured one particularly hilarious event.....Al Gore introducing the Foo Fighters.

Back in the 1980's, when Centerline and I were both hard-rocking heavy metal fans, Tipper Gore founded the PMRC (parent music resource center) to fight against explicit lyrics. ....and all of a sudden it was harder for me to buy my Winger and Dokken casette tapes at the local Wal-Mart! So given that fact alone it was strange to see Gore rocking out with a band like the Foo Fighters. But it gets better....

The PMRC was founded in response to Al and Tipper's shock (SHOCK!) at the lyrics of one particular song - 'Darling Nikki' by Prince.

I knew a girl named Nikki/I guess u could say she was a sex fiend/I met her in a hotel lobbyMasturbating with a magazine/She said how'd u like 2 waste some time/And I could not resist when I saw little Nikki grind

I can't tell u what she did 2 me/But my body will never be the same/Her lovin' will kick your behind/Oh, she'll show u no mercy/But she'll sho 'nuff sho 'nuff show u how 2 grind

So Nikki sounds like a fun girl but still pretty explict lyrics for 1984 standards - but the best part is that the Foo Fighters recently had a succesful remake of this same 'Darling Nikki' in 2004! I guess algore got over his outrage?

Here's hoping that the Gore's enjoy the same lack of success with their current jihad against the fiction of 'global climate change' as they experienced with their crusade against free speech via the PMRC.

Come-on, Mr. Webb…. Those of us who are 200% behind a Gore candidacy do not at all appreciate contributions such as these. We need the explicit lyrics to distract discerning minds from examining data contradictory to our religion.

As an example, I would rather listen to Nikki’s small, albeit much more interesting contribution to global warming than to researches from the University of California at Santa Cruz, who allege that the Ross Ice Shelf (and most other parts of the Antarctic continent) have thickening ice (http://www.usatoday.com/news/science/cold-science/2002-01-18-wais-thicker.htm).

Those of us who have continued rocking through the present do not want to hear that the glaciers on and around Kilimanjaro have been receding since the early seventeenth century (http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2003/09/0923_030923_kilimanjaroglaciers.html). I would much rather take my information from Madonna, Gore and the Foo Fighters.

And who amongst us would not rather listen to Snoop Dog impart his opinion on climate change rather than learn about the ALARMING GLOBAL COOLING that has taken place since 1998? Fo' shizzle, m'nizzle!!!

A cynic would contend that Al Gore’s candidacy would be buffoonish and thus help, as Michael Moore does, those who oppose his views. We the rockers, who have not lost our wide-eyed innocence, feel that Al Gore’s contributions to science speak for themselves and that, as the planet continues on its path of self-destruction, we need leaders of his caliber to guide us out of the wilderness.

The last thing I want to do is to attach myself to Al Gore. Just FYI, he is not what triggered my global climate change concerns. In fact, I have not even seen his movie.

Also, I liked both of those articles Centerline. The Antartica issue is very interesting, and we'll see where that goes. Whether you agree with human caused global climate change or not, it's interesting that Antartica is the only continent not increasing in temperature.

On the Kilamanjaro issue, I agree with Douglas Hardy's assessment (who wouldn't?), who says, "There's a tendency for people to take this temperature increase and draw quick conclusions, which is a mistake. The real explanations are much more complex. Global warming plays a part, but a variety of factors are really involved."

This fits my ideas exactly. Not every occurrence of melting ice or rising temperatures is due to GLOBAL climate change. That does not mean it's not happening. And, if we cause LOCAL climate change, by cutting down trees, or building asphalt parking lots, in enough places, well, then lo and behold, that will become global climate change.
