Flag Patriots

I think this type of "support" for the troops is ridiculous. I, for one, am in favor of bringing our troops home immediately. That is the only "support" that the average soldier in Iraq cares about. This flag lowering nonsense is simply to assuage our cumulative american guilt. It's the opposite side of the same coin that censors graphic pictures and information about the war.

I'm not sure what you are talking about here. Do you think they should lower it or keep it flying? Personally, I think they should keep it flying. I mean how may flags would have ever been up at Antietam, Bull Run, Wake Island, etc...

And as for support, I think you are a little misguided here. I do not think all the troops wants out. Some do, some don't.

If you really want to support them send a care package or a phone card. Many places you can do it on the internet.

I think what Carl is saying is that lowering the staff to half mast is a lame way to "support the troops". Typically the American public would be able to view the fallen soldier's caskets being honored as they came back to the states....of course we are not allowed to see this solemn service anymore. I believe that the administration's policy to hide this from the public is one of the most blatant forms of manipulation. Out of sight, out of mind.

Dan Rather Reports did an interesting segment about a commercial flight that carried a soldier's body back from war. The passenger reaction to this event was profound.

As far as the flag, since it was the federal government that sent our troops overseas, I believe that they should be the only ones who should order the flag lowered. But they will still use it for their own PR reasons primarily. For instance, I think that they got it wrong by doing this for the VT shootings. I remember that the troops were upset at this in fact.

nchokie is correct. I think lowering the flag to half mast for individual troops during a war is ridiculous.
